One of the best football (soccer) players of his generation, Cristiano Ronaldo was born in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, on February 5, 1985. Ronaldo is the first men’s player to reach 900 career goals in official matches in 2024. He has also won five Ballon d’Or honors (2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017).

Childhood and early work

José Dinis Aveiro, Ronaldo’s father, managed the equipment for the local team Andorinha. (To honor Ronald Reagan, the U.S. president when Cristiano was born and his father’s favorite movie star, the name Ronaldo was added to Cristiano’s name.) Ronaldo had a cardiac problem at the age of 15 that required surgery, but he recovered fully and was only temporarily sidelined. Prior to making his debut for Sporting’s first squad in 2002, he played for Clube Desportivo Nacional of Madeira before moving to Sporting Clube de Portugal (often known as Sporting Lisbon) and playing for the club’s numerous youth teams.

Ronaldo, who was 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 meters) tall, was a powerful athlete on the field. A forward with a free-reined attacking style, he started out as a right-winger. Using a sleight of foot that created enough room for gaps in opposing defenses, he was able to captivate opponents.

Playing at the club

Ronaldo joined English superpower Manchester United in 2003 following a stellar season with Sporting that attracted the interest of Europe’s top football clubs. He became well-known right away and was quickly considered one of the game’s top forwards. In 2007–08, he had his best season at United, scoring 42 League and Cup goals and winning the Golden Shoe award for being Europe’s top scorer with 31 League goals. Ronaldo won the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Player of the Year award for his outstanding 2007–08 campaign after leading United to a Champions League championship in May 2008. Additionally, he guided United to the 2009 Champions League final, when they were defeated by FC Barcelona.

Soon after, Ronaldo was sold for a then-record £80 million (about $131 million) to Real Madrid of Spain, a team he had long been speculated to want to play for. His scoring ability persisted with his new squad, and in the 2010–11 season, he scored the most goals (40) in La Liga history. His opponent Lionel Messi of Barcelona shattered his record the next season. Ronaldo scored a career-high 46 goals during the 2011–12 season and assisted Madrid in winning La Liga. He won his second world player of the year award in 2013 after scoring 66 goals in 56 games with Madrid and the Portuguese national team (the FIFA World Player of the Year was renamed the FIFA Ballon d’Or in 2010).

Ronaldo won another Ballon d’Or in 2014 after leading Real Madrid to a Champions League championship with 52 goals in 43 games. He led La Liga in goals scored in 2014–15 with 48 goals. In October 2015, Ronaldo scored his 324th goal while playing for Real Madrid, making him the team’s all-time top scorer. In addition to helping Real Madrid win a record 11th Champions League title and scoring 35 La Liga goals in 2015–16, he was awarded his fourth career Ballon d’Or in December 2016. Ronaldo won his fifth career Ballon d’Or trophy in 2016–17 after leading Real Madrid to La Liga and Champions League victories with 42 goals in all competitions. He scored 44 goals in 44 games in 2017–18, helping Real win the Champions League for the third time in a row.

He signed a four-year contract with Juventus, the dominant team in Italy, in July 2018 for €112 million, or roughly $132 million. He scored 311 goals in 292 games throughout his Real Madrid career. In his debut season at Juventus, he scored 28 goals, which was his lowest domestic goal total since his final season with Manchester United, and the dominant team won the Italian league for the seventh consecutive year. Juventus won the 2020 Supercoppa Italiana and the 2021 Coppa Italia Final after Ronaldo helped the team win another league championship in the 2019–20 season. He left Juventus and rejoined Manchester United a few months after the latter game. But his second stay with the team was a letdown. Manchester and Ronaldo both had difficulties, and he became increasingly displeased with the team. His contract was ended by “mutual agreement” in November 2022. Ronaldo joined the Saudi Arabian team Al Nassr the following month.

A career abroad

Ronaldo made his debut for Portugal’s entire national team against Kazakhstan in August 2003, four days after making his United debut, after progressing through the youth and under-21 categories at home. He had a significant role in Portugal’s World Cup fourth-place result in 2006 and was named the team’s full-time captain in 2008. Portugal advanced to the European Championship semifinals in 2012 because to his outstanding play, but rival Spain defeated his side in a match that was settled by a penalty kick shootout. Ronaldo had just won his second world player of the year award going into the 2014 World Cup, but his performance was inconsistent, and Portugal as a whole lost in the group stage.

Ronaldo played briefly in the final due to a knee injury he had acquired early in the game, but he did assist Portugal win the European Championship in 2016, the nation’s first major international tournament championship. Ronaldo had an outstanding 2018 World Cup campaign, scoring four goals in four games to help Portugal reach the knockout round before losing to a formidable Uruguay defense in their opening match. Ronaldo became the first male player to score at five World Cups four years later. But he missed a number of games in the starting lineup, and Portugal lost in the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup. Ronaldo became the first men’s player to reach the 900th goal in his career in a 2024 UEFA Nations League group stage match against Croatia.

Legal concerns and endorsements

When he was playing at his best, Ronaldo was the most popular athlete in the world, according to multiple studies on the subject. He was also one of the most well-known sports stars off the field. In November 2016, Ronaldo became the third person (after basketball greats Michael Jordan and LeBron James) to sign a “lifetime” contract with the sportswear firm Nike, making him one of the highest-paid endorsers in sports history. In addition, he created his own lucrative “CR7” line of footwear, undergarments, and fragrances. In June 2017, a legal dispute centered on Ronaldo’s enormous marketability. In a complaint filed that month, prosecutors said Ronaldo had concealed his image-rights earnings in Spain from 2011 to 2014, cheating the Spanish government out of €14.7 million ($16.5 million). Ronaldo rejected all of the charges against him, including underestimating the money he received from the sale and licensing of his image rights and the related tax liabilities. He did, however, agree to pay €18.8 million ($21.8 million) to the Spanish government in order to resolve the case in June 2018 and accept a suspended two-year prison sentence.

Net Worth

Ronaldo’s whole wealth is projected to be approximately $600 million as of July 2024, per Celebrity Net Worth.

For the fourth consecutive year, Ronaldo topped Forbes’ annual list of the highest-paid athletes in the world in March 2024. His substantial contract with Al-Nassr was the primary source of his estimated $260 million in revenue.
